Sadie Jean - Simple Like 17 Tour
April 25, 2024 - Velvet Underground - Toronto, ON

Sadie Jean’s first headlining tour stops in the only Canadian city on the tour in
Toronto, ON, Canada.
It felt like something out of a fairytale to see Sadie Jean perform at The Velvet Underground
because originally she was supposed to perform at The Drake Hotel, but due to high demand, the venue was upgraded.
The opening act, Jake Minch, had a pretty solid set with many fans only there to see him, including many girls and even a few girls and their moms.
I found that during Jake’s song Jessie is when the crowd went the most crazy, and you could tell that many of the fans thought he was cute. They were watching him soulfully like they had a certain sparkle in their eyes.
During soundcheck, she sang an acoustic setlist including a cover of Dear John by Taylor Swift, which had the group of 30 people go wild. She got a handmade hat from a fan. She also gave signed CDs away for her deluxe album that comes out on May 17, 2024.
During her opening song, “Lights On '' there was a project where everyone held up a little piece of paper in front of their flashlight on their phone. During the part: “I can love you with the lights on, I don't wanna read your heart wrong, I’ll be patient baby tell me everything you want,” is when the crowd got the loudest during the song.
Next up on the setlist is “Just Because”. I feel like this hit home with many girls in the crowd. Especially during the part: “Just because I miss you, doesn’t mean I want you back, and just because I almost called, doesn’t mean I wish I had, and just because I felt like dying when you left out of the blue, it doesn’t mean I wanna be with anyone like you.” I feel like that could either be about a friendship, situationship, or relationship; several people were crying whilst singing those lyrics.
Then she got a little bit personal and talked about her past relationships and how they cheated on her, which of everyone said BOOO, and someone even said Dump his ass while someone else said EWW, OKcause we don’t tolerate that, am I right??
Next up, she sang Simple Like 17, which is the name of her tour, so I knew there was going to be some type of significance, and there was, especially when I heard the crowd scream singing these lyrics in particular.
“Nothing will ever be simple like seventeen and the way that you loved me with no composure, and nothing will ever hurt like being' a lesson learned and thinkin' it coulda worked if we were older, but nothing will ever be simple like seventeen”.
When Sadie played the guitar or keyboard, you could tell that it got really emotional, as most of the fans had tears in their eyes. There was a girl who was at the venue at 8 a.m., and she flew all the way from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to see Sadie, as this was her only tour stop in Canada.
Sadie then played a song she had just released on April 17, the first night of her headlining tour. It's called "You Don’t,” and despite it being just released, the whole crowd knew the lyrics and sang along. Sadie looked around with a certain glow in her eyes, realizing she was a big star.
Fast-forward to her song “16.” there was another fan project where everyone had a star and wrote something on it, and they held it up for the whole song and chanted, “Dreaming, gonna grow up, be a BIG STAR,” which Sadie once again looked out into the crowd and had a massive smile on her face.
Next up is one of my personal favorites, “Locksmith,” which is the song that made me a fan of Sadie in 2021 when she shared a snippet of it, yet it was released in 2022, so to be able to hear that song, and sing along was like a dream. It was also a song that many people, including myself, cried while she sang it while playing the acoustic guitar.
Then she sang a duet cover with Jake Minch to “The Climb by Miley Cyrus,” which many fans freaked out at, and hardly anyone was filming; they were just there in the moment and soaking the experience in.
Next, we have “Good to Know'' she sang this while playing piano, and it hit a lot of fans in the feels and a girl next to me mentioned this song healed her in many ways once it came out. It had very relatable lyrics, including “It’s good to know you want me back, I don’t know what to do with that if you never texted and you never called, you say it best saying nothing at all, it's good to know I’m all you need. You’re telling everyone but me I wish you would text and I wish you would call, but you say it best saying nothing at all. I’m always gonna love you, and you’ll always want what we had; it’s too late but too soon ..”
Last up is going to be her song WYD NOW, where the final fan project took place. In the middle of the song, Sadie was handed a Canadian Flag that many people signed and wrote something to her on. As you can see in the shot below, she adored it.
If you ever get a chance to see Sadie at a show I suggest you buy a ticket because I guarantee you’ll have an amazing time.
